In Mass Effect, you travel around the gameworld in squads of three. Like many squad based games, you can freely and easily switch between any member of your squad. All the characters are essentially owned by the player, allowing the player to deck each character out with a full set of weaponry (up to 4 at a time) as well as grow the characters stats.
There are three different classes in Mass Effect that you can choose from for your squad. The three different classes are soldiers (great with weapons), tech specialists (a class that’s excellent at knocking out shields and power systems), and Vanguards, intelligent characters who can control Biotics, i.e., a class that can enhance genetically to manipulate objects (sort of like other game’s telekenetic classes). Each specialty is distinctly unique, and throughout the game you will be able to learn new tactics to use your class to the best of its ability.
The squad combat in Mass Effect can be handled in numerous ways. One option is to fight the enemy yourself and let your AI squad mates do their own thing. According to Bioware the AI will handle itself very well in combat, so you can simply tell it to “flank right” and the character will stealthily move around to the right of the enemy. Another option during combat is to freeze the game using the start/stop button. When the game is frozen, you can drag and drop your characters to specific locations around the enemy.
